RUMOUR ABOUT DAMAGE CAUSED TO THE SACRED BODHI TREE

(Mahabodhi Temple, Buddhagaya, INDIA) July 21, 2006    

     This is to inform all devotees of the Buddha and mankind in general that a rumour has been spreading all around that the sacred Bodhi Tree situated inside the Mahabodhi Mahavihara has been destroyed / desecrated by chopping off a branch a few days ago.

     The Bodhi Tree is a very sacred object of veneration and we all at the Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee are aware of its universal value. Therefore, the Committee takes utmost interest for the well-being of the tree. Security is provided all round the clock and no one is allowed to pluck a single leaf from the tree. Botanists are regularly invited from the Rajendra Agricultural University, Patna to check the health of the tree from time to time. As you all will know, the tree was in a bad state of health a few years back and we all worked hard to bring back the tree to its present health - green and healthy.

     The entire fact of the present controversy is that in the year 1979 a few of the branches were chopped on recommendations made by the experts about its one-sided growth which may cause damage to the Mahabodhi Temple and to bring about a balanced growth. Thus the cut portions have been the bane of the present controversy.

     We appeal to all the devotees of the Buddha not to believe in these false rumours and propaganda and we assure you all of the good health of the tree at all times.
